Speed and agility is important, but you need to know how to practice to improve those skills. Running yourself ragged by training for long lengths of time or by running long distances won’t benefit your play on the court. Instead, practice sprints and other short bursts of exercise. This better mimics how on the court play really is.
To inbound a basketball, you need to be able to learn to fake defenders out. You can use the ball to fake in one direction and then pass in another. Defenders often will jump at your first fake, giving your teammate the chance to get wide open. Use this to beat those opponents who try to cheat the pass.
Practice catching the basketball while you are moving and stopping cold for a shot. Basketball is a fast paced game, and the constant movement can throw your shot off during game time. This is especially true if you’ve practiced your shooting standing still. That is not as common in a game experience. Get the feel for moving, stopping, and shooting. If you are the parent of a young up and coming basketball player, make sure the coach you trust them with isn’t too obsessed about winning. Although this may sound counterproductive, it’s actually more important that your son or daughter be encouraged thoughtfully and with care, rather than screamed at and threatened. Check out the reputation of any coach first.
It is not always necessary to dribble the ball. In fact, you should only dribble it when it is part of your play. For instance, you will want to dribble the ball when you are trying to get the ball up the court, to get in a position for passing, or to get the defense off you. One of the most important skills when playing basketball is balance. Everyone has seen professional basketball players make a shot from 20 feet away as they are falling. This kind of improvisation is the result of years of practice and loads of ability. Having a good foundation under you while shooting will always yield better results over time as you keep on practicing and honing your skills. You don’t have to worry about your basketball skills any longer. Now you may even have a few pointers that people you know didn’t even have in mind. Keep in mind that basketball is supposed to be fun. Apply the knowledge you have learned here and you will be winning games and having fun in no time!
Know that basketball isn’t everything. You still may have school to deal with or the things that everyone has in life. It’s OK to have an “off” day where you don’t play the game that you thought you should have. Having the right attitude to everything and being able to manage it all makes you a better player.
You need to practice dribbling with your weak hand in order to be a more effective player. Utilizing both hands to dribble the basketball and switching effortlessly is key to advantage over an opponent. To help develop your weaker hand, avoid using your dominant hand. Eventually, your weak hand will be able to dribble well. Spread your fingers out to handle the ball properly. The ball will not get away if you always keep your fingers spread when handling the ball. You should avoid having your palm touching the ball. When shooting or passing the ball, only your fingers should contact the ball.
Practice shooting free throws. This may seem like an easy task, but in reality, things prove otherwise. Use this technique to better your game. Start with the ball ahead of your face. Maintain focus on the basket and try to visualize your basketball falling through the hoop. Then, shoot the ball using the trajectory you pictured.
Patience can be a key component to getting the best shot. Taking a perimeter jump shot from near the three point line while early into the offense is probably not the best idea. Instead, get into your half court set and begin looking for the open shot. Look down low for an easy basket or outside for an open three point shot. Always protect the ball when you are in possession of it. Keep your dribble off to the side of your body to make it more difficult for another player to steal the ball. While you generally want to avoid dribbling in front of you, you can do so if there are no other players in your immediate vicinity.
